We are the UK's leading charity for electrical safety.
We want to make sure that everyone in the UK can use electricity safely.
We provide advice and guidance for people to buy and use electrical products safely, and how to ensure their homes are electrically safe.
We work with the media, government, businesses and electrical industry to spread our messages far and wide.
Our work covers many consumer issues, including:
- electrical product recall and registration,
- doing DIY work safely around home electrics,
- the importance of using registered electricians,
- the dangers of counterfeit and fake electrical goods.
As well as raising public awareness, we work with politicians to ensure the UK Government is doing all it can to keep people safe from electrical accidents.
Did you know?
We are a registered UK charity, and used to be known as the Electrical Safety Council, or ESC.
We were originally established as the National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting (NICEIC) in 1956.
We work with all sectors of the electrical industry as well as local and central government to reduce deaths and injuries caused by electrical accidents.

A safer future for an electric world
- Our strategy reflects the increasing importance of electrical safety as the UK aims for net zero emissions by 2050, despite challenging socio-economic circumstances.
- It shows how we will use a range of activities, focused on three key strategic priorities, to achieve our mission.
Our strategic areas of focus:
- Be the recognised expert voice in electrical safety Expanding our profile and audience. Increasing our communication reach.
- Safer electrical installations Ensuring all UK home installations – e.g. the fixed wiring are safe.
- Safer products Collaborating on product safety standards, while responding to the challenges of online shopping.
Our websites for children and teens share electrical safety information in a fun and accessible way through games, quizzes and interactive learning.
Teachers can download lesson plans and revision notes.
At Electrical Safety First we are committed to a culture of inclusivity and equality.
We believe the diversity of our team empowers us to campaign on behalf of everyone in the UK, to keep them safe from electrical risk.
Electrical Safety First’s grant schemes have been running successfully for a number of years and now awards more than £1 million in funding annually.
This funding directly benefits more than 100,000 people each year and reaches 2.5 million through awareness and education projects in local communities and schools.
