Trustees - Electrical Safety First

Trustees x 2

(Based London SE1)

Electrical Safety First is the UK charity dedicated to reducing deaths and injuries caused by electrical accidents. Our aim is to ensure everyone in the UK can use electricity safely.

We campaign on behalf of consumers and electrical trade professionals to improve safety regulation and make sure that safety messages are appropriate, up to date and well communicated. We also provide expert information and advice to help people protect themselves from faulty, damaged, sub-standard and poorly maintained electrical installations and appliances.

We are recognised by government and industry as the leading campaigning charity and technical authority on electrical safety. We have a strong relationship with the Office for Product Safety and Standards, who lead Government policy on product safety, standards and accreditation. We also work closely with experts in a range of fields including manufacturers and retailers.

As a consumer-facing campaigning charity we call for better regulation of online marketplaces, we also run award-winning consumer campaigns to inform the public against the risk of recalled or counterfeit appliances.

We are also seeking clarity on the regulations in a post-Brexit Britain relating to imported electrical products and ramping up our expert information and advice as we push towards the UK’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050. Electricity will play an increasingly important role in our society with electric vehicle and smart devices increasing in use, yet many consumers are unfamiliar with the risks.

We know that great governance and great people are at the heart of a successful and sustainable organisation. We are a diverse board of 13 Trustees. Each of us also play an important role in one of our committees. Two Trustees complete their term of office this year and we are looking to replace the expertise we are losing with similar skill sets.

New Trustees will both have strategic vision:

  • One will have a Consumer Affairs background with the confidence to critique and challenge our approach to engaging key target audiences.
  • The other new Trustee will bring a commercial / business background, but most importantly the strategic vision and ability to help us reflect on and manage our business activity.

We are committed to further increasing the diversity of our Board and are in particular would like to broaden the age and social background characteristics. Having different consumer perspectives on our Board will bring an additional layer of richness to our debates and discussions.

The time and desire to engage fully is important to us, so attendance at four board meetings per year, and another four committee meetings, is critical. You must be able to give on average one day per month to this role.

Our work has a positive impact on every person in the UK and we would like you to help us increase this impact.

In return for your time and energy we will commit to ensuring that you are trained in charity governance and what it is to be a good board member. There will also be opportunities to network with other charity Trustees at conferences and other relevant events. For more information please visit:
