I have 6 cables, 2 neutral, 2x red, 1 black, 1 black with a brown tape on it. Only 1 red is live and has a current. Is the taped black live or neutral please?

We do not recommend that you carry out this work yourself unless you are competent to do so.

The wiring at a light fitting needs to be tested, particularly in an older installation where the cables have not been marked.

Some of wires will be the supply to the light, some will be the supply to the switch and some will be the return switched live from the switch, (probably the black wire with the brown tape). The colours of the wires will not necessarily identify its function.

For this type of work, we would always recommend that you use a registered electrician. This gives you the peace of mind that if something does go wrong, the work is insured and their scheme operator can help you if you are not satisfied.

You can find an electrician local to you here.
