If I bought an electrical appliance that came with an EU plug on the charging cable and then bought an official UK adapter, would the product be safe to use?

Electrical products sold in the UK are required by law to have a fitted UK plug or fitted converter plug – not an adaptor in the box or purchased separately. I suggest you return the item to the retailer and tell them to provide you with a replacement with a fitted UK plug or ask for a refund. Using an adaptor should always be a temporary way of connecting to the supply – for example when you are on holiday – it is not good practice to use an adaptor on a permanent basis.
