Electrical Safety First created the Safety Innovation Award to recognise excellence of product safety initiatives within the industry.
We have invited applications from organisations that have developed an innovative product or project that has or will make a difference to improve consumer safety. Applications included a detailed description together with supporting evidence.
The winner will be announced at the Electrical Product Safety Conference on Thursday 26 October at Church House, London.

2026 Safety innovation award shortlist
City St George's, University of London
Safer appliance maintenance pairs a guided digital procedure with a live phone measurement, helping people carry out permitted appliance maintenance and understand the result. Its safety principle is uncompromising: the system fails safe.
It keeps users within the manufacturer's permitted task, separates what the measurement proves from what a person must check, and withdraws reassurance the moment the evidence is missing — telling the user when to stop and seek competent help.
First use case: washing-machine levelling. A working prototype today, with validation planned before deployment.
FOLO-UP (Flagging Online Listings of Unsafe Products)
FOLO-UP is an independent product-safety intelligence initiative tackling unsafe, non-compliant and counterfeit goods sold online. It turns scattered marketplace signals into structured evidence, helping experts spot patterns, prioritise risks and push for action before more consumers are harmed.
Whistle UP (Whistle: Unsafe Products)
Whistle is FOLO-UP’s browser extension for flagging suspicious product listings while browsing. Whistle opens as a side panel on the right of the screen next to the marketplace listing. The side panel has three tabs:
- a checklist on what to look for with unsafe products in the same category as the listing
- the reviews for the listing that contain information about product failure or personal injury
- the ability to flag the listing as possibly unsafe, for other users to see
Miele
Community Electrical Safety & Energy Education Programme
This project outlines a high-impact social sustainability initiative designed to strengthen community wellbeing, improve household safety, and support Miele’s global sustainability strategy through real, measurable outcomes. The project leverages the unique expertise of Miele GB’s National Technical Trainers to deliver electrical safety, energy awareness, and appliance care education directly to communities across the UK—helping people reduce risk, lower energy bills, and extend the life of their appliances.
SolarEdge
SolarEdge Sense Connect and SafeDC™ are two built-in safety features within SolarEdge's multi-layered approach to PV safety, both independently validated by TNO.
SolarEdge Sense Connect is a prevention technology. It monitors the connectors on Power Optimisers for abnormal temperature rises, an early warning sign of a faulty or poorly installed connection, and automatically shuts the system down before it becomes a fire risk.
SafeDC™ is a mitigation technology. When the inverter or AC grid is switched off, it automatically reduces the DC voltage on the roof to a touch-safe level of 1V per optimiser, protecting installers, maintenance teams and firefighters.
