Vapes and e-cigarettes

Millions of people use vapes (also known as e-cigarettes) but there is a risk of accidents involving faulty vape chargers and vapes exploding, causing injury and serious fires.

There's virtually no difference between an e-cigarette and a vape with the terms both used to describe battery-operated devices which heat an e-liquid into vapour.

Most people using vapes use a rechargeable product with either replaceable, pre-filled cartridges or a reservoir/tank for refills.

Most vape chargers don’t have standard plugs or fuses fitted. They are usually direct plug-in devices with standard plug pins. You must only use a charger from a reputable source as there are many substandard, dangerous chargers available.

Key points

  • Read the manufacturer's instructions carefully and always follow them.
  • Protect your vape from damage and don’t immerse it in water.
  • Keep vapes away from coins and keys as this could cause a fire or explosion.
  • Do regular checks of the charger plug and socket for burn and scorch marks.
  • Recycle old vapes properly, don’t dispose of them in the general waste or normal recycling.

Buying a vape and charger

Whichever you choose, buy your vape and charger from a reputable retailer rather than a third-party seller online, as it may not have passed all the necessary safety checks.

You will find lots of online reviews of vapes but don’t rely solely on these as they can be faked by unscrupulous sellers. Disposable vapes have been illegal in the UK since June 2025.

Register your product so you can be contacted easily if there is a safety recall of your product. It’s also much easier to return a faulty item or order a repair if it’s registered.

Using a vape safely

  • Follow the provided instructions carefully and pay close attention to any warnings supplied with the product. Battery capacities and charging voltages vary according to manufacturer so it’s important to check you are using the correct charger.
  • Don’t cover vapes that are on charge as this could cause overheating. And avoid storing, using, or charging a vape in extreme temperatures.
  • Protect your vape against being damaged, crushed or punctured. Don’t immerse it in water.
  • Don’t modify your vape and use only replacement parts approved by the manufacturer.
  • Don’t charge vapes for long periods of time and never leave them plugged in overnight or while you are out of the house.
  • Never keep loose vapes in your pocket, particularly next to keys or coins, as this is more likely to cause a fire or explosion.

ALWAYS

  • Do plenty of research first before buying.
  • Buy from a reputable retailer.
  • Buy a known and trusted brand.
  • Buy replacement chargers from the original manufacturer or reputable retailer.
  • Take old vapes to be recycled properly.

AVOID

  • Buying from third-party sellers online.
  • Placing a vape in water or any other liquid.
  • Charging a vape overnight or while you are out of the house.
  • Keeping a vape in your pocket, especially close to keys or coins.
  • Using the vape charger if you notice any damage or sparks.

Stay safe with electrical products

Check plugs and sockets

Regularly check the charger and/or plug and your socket-outlet for burn marks, sounds of ‘arcing’ (buzzing or crackling) or if it feels too hot to touch.

Protect with an RCD

An RCD (residual current device) in your consumer unit (fusebox) protects you from electric shocks should there be a fault with the vape charger. If you don’t have RCD protection, use an RCD plug on the socket where the charger is plugged in.

Disposing of a vape safely

Don’t throw vapes into the general waste or in the normal recycling. Because they contain lithium-ion batteries, they can get crushed or damaged and spark dangerous fires in recycling centres or bin lorries.

They must be recycled properly. Check our guidance on recycling electricals or find out more on Recycle Your Electricals.

Additional info

Data from the UK’s largest waste management company Biffa revealed more than 840,000 vapes were found in four of its sites between June and September 2025 – an average of more than 7,000 every day.

Incorrect disposal in general waste or recycling bins can cause fires and explosions in bin lorries and waste centre sites, putting workers at serious risk, damaging equipment, disrupting services, and causing environmental harm.
