Electrical safety in the Private Rented Sector

Commenting on the new report by the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Private Rented Sector, Phil Buckle, Director General of Electrical Safety First said:

“We welcome this new report on the Private Rented Sector (PRS) and are delighted that the APPG agree with our call for increased electrical safety in the sector.

“The APPG’s recommendation that there should be a statutory requirement for landlords to have regular electrical safety tests, as they do with gas appliances, is one Electrical Safety First has long campaigned for – and we have recently seen our work in Scotland lead to an amendment on this subject being included in the new Scottish Housing Bill.

“We also strongly support the emphasis the APPG report gives to the need for tenants to be well informed. Electrical Safety First is one of the bodies leading on this issue, as illustrated by our range of campaigns for both landlords and tenants. And we fully endorse the report’s call for tenants to be able to see gas safety certificates- and any new electrical safety certification for their homes - online, as they can with Energy Performance Certificates.”
