The beautiful C17th Tallow Chandlers Hall was a fitting location for the Lightmongers’ May Court dinner, where Bonnie Brooks was presented with the Lightmongers/UCL Award – sponsored by Electrical Safety First - for outstanding achievement.
The award is open to students undertaking an MSc in Light and Lighting at the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies, part of University College London.
Each year, students are asked to come up with lighting solutions and a business case to a real-life project. Bonnie, who undertook her Masters part-time, while continuing to work as a lighting specialist for an engineering consultancy, impressed judges with her ideas for the Tamar Bridge offices project.
The Tamar Bridge is a major road bridge at Saltash and Plymouth which carries traffic between Cornwall and Devon over the River Tamar. Currently undergoing a major refurbishment, the project will include a new control room, staff facilities and an education suite.
“It wasn’t easy studying for a Masters and working but the course was extremely rewarding and I was thrilled when they told me I had won the award”, says Bonnie. “I do think it will help my career development and I’m delighted that my hard work – and my ideas! – were recognised in this way.”
Phil Buckle, Director General of Electrical Safety First adds: “We have funded this award, in conjunction with the Worshipful Company of Lightmongers, for 8 years and we have been gratified at the boost it has given to the careers of award-winners”.
“While our primary focus is on consumer safety, we also recognise the need to support the education and training of those who work in related areas. Modern lighting design, which in addition to the aesthetic element it brings to our world, requires a solid understanding of electrical safety.”
