I live in a privately owned property - how often do I have to get the electrics checked?

Although the law changed in June 2020 for privately rented properties, requiring landlords to have an inspection of the electrical installation carried out every five years, there is no legal requirement for people who own their properties to have the electrics checked.

For your own peace of mind however, Electrical Safety First does recommend that owner occupiers have their electrical installation checked every ten years. The best way to do this is to use a registered electrician to carry out the inspection, after which they'll issue you with an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) that will let you know if any work is required.

You can find a registered electrician in your area here.
